Central Coast workers are being encouraged to get on their bikes and join in Australia’s biggest celebration of commuter riding on Wednesday, October 16.
National Ride2Work Day is organised by Australian charity Bicycle Network and aims to support and celebrate the many health, wellbeing and environmental benefits riding provides.
To mark the occasion, Central Coast Local Health District will be hosting a gathering of bike-minded people at Gosford Hospital outside the Central Coast Clinical School and Research Institute building on Holden St.
Riders – and anyone interested in riding but needing a nudge – can roll up any time between 7am and 8:30am to receive one of 25 free coffee vouchers, a reusable Go Active 2 Work cup, and to enjoy a chat.
The Gosford Hospital gathering is one of a number of Ride2Work Day events taking place across the nation on what is the day of the year for commuters to choose to ride, connect and celebrate with other members of the community.
Justine Gowland-Ella, Healthy Eating Active Living team leader at Central Coast Local Health District, is a regular bike commuter to Gosford Hospital.
“Cycling is such a great way to get to work – I arrive energised and happy – particularly knowing that I’ve got my daily exercise done,” Justine said.
“With my busy work and family life, finding the time to exercise is a challenge. Commuting by bike helps me fit it all into my day, while also doing my bit for the environment and saving me time finding a car park too.”
Cycling regularly, even for a few minutes at a time, can help reduce the risk of many diseases, including some cancers, and helps maintain a healthy weight.
“It is also a good way for us to look after our mental health during Mental Health Month, which takes place throughout October.”
