Chittaway Point was put on evacuation warning on Friday, April 5, as torrential rain pummelled the Central Coat and the Wyong River continued to rise.
The warning followed notification of possible flooding given earlier in the day by the State Emergency Service (SES).
Sandbags were distributed as homes around the river and Tuggerah Lakes remained under threat, but an SES spokesperson said on Saturday morning, April 6, that no evacuations had been necessary to date.
“We are waiting for a slight peak later this afternoon to reassess,” the spokesperson said.
“But we have had teams on the ground this morning and at this stage roads are still open in parts.”
The spokesperson said while no more rain was predicted, the river would continue to rise as water from tributaries further downstream made its way north.
Residents around Wyong River and Tuggerah Lakes (especially at Long Jetty) are warned to stay alert.
With some road closures still in place, residents are reminded to obey all signs and instructions from emergency services.
Never drive, walk, ride through, play or swim in flood water – it is dangerous, toxic, and may void your car insurance.
Avoid storm drains and pipes, ditches, ravines, creeks, and rivers.
People in areas likely to be impacted by flooding should raise their assets, including waste and chemical containers above expected flood heights.
