St. Joseph’s workshop at West Gosford has been operating for more than 25 years making furniture for the disadvantaged and is looking for more volunteers.
An initiative of the St Vincent de Paul Society, the workshop’s volunteers make such items as three-drawer cabinets, bedside chests and larger tall boys, kids’ tables and chairs in different colours and hanging rack for clothes.
“The workshop is fitted out with very high-tech machinery and our own paint shop to ensure we produce the best quality products,” committee member Kevin O’Donnell said.
A wide variety of volunteers includes retired doctors, pharmacists, sales people, mechanics, boiler makers and teachers, with both men and women welcome.
“There is a great sense of accomplishment in the work achieved each day at the workshop and pride in the workmanship presented,” O’Donnell said.
Workshop Manager Wayne Gibb said the relaxed atmosphere makes it a great place to be.
“We’re all volunteers just wanting to give back to the community,” he said.
“We’re open to anybody of any age.
“The shifts are 7am to midday Monday to Friday and it’s a lot of fun.”
Member for Gosford Liesl Tesch popped in recently for a visit and said it was like visiting Santa’s workshop.
“It’s filled with elves making furniture for vulnerable people across our community,” she said.
“The work that these dedicated volunteers are doing is fantastic and should be applauded. for their selfless service.
“If you enjoy handywork and want to give back to the community, I encourage you to become a part of this great team.”
An approved employer, the workshop can satisfy Centrelink voluntary work requirements for those on JobSeeker.
