Copacabana Social Tennis group will hold a special event in January, with players invited to come dressed as their favourite tennis player.
Members of the group enjoyed a Christmas gathering early in December organised by a group of local tennis enthusiasts led by local GP Dr Risto Cvetkovic from Copacabana Medical Centre.
“Tennis is such a beautiful sport, played at all ages,” Cvetkovic said.
“It engages the entire body and mind and thus is excellent for health and recreation.
“It also has this social element with it and promotes court etiquette and fair play, something both children and adults can benefit from.”
The tennis courts are located a short stroll from Copacabana Beach with two artificial grass courts, a cosy clubhouse with barbecue facilities, sheltered seating, table tennis and a kids’ play area in the adjoining park, surrounded by trees.
The Copacabana Social Tennis group is self-funded and meets once a month on a Sunday.
It is free (with gold coin donation) and open to everyone, both existing and potential new tennis club members.
Lots of fun, food and drinks, tennis balls and even racquets are provided.
The only requirement is for good weather and for keen and interested players to participate and bring their friends and family.
In between the monthly events, members of the social group organise ad-hoc tennis practice and matches.
The Christmas Party Special saw a revival of the Wooden Racquet competition.
The Australian Open Special event will be held on Sunday, January 22.
Players are invited to braid their hair like Serena Williams, put on a chequered headband like Pat Cash or sport a heavy mo a la John Newcombe to enter the Get Dressed as Your Favourite Tennis Player competition.
