Woy Woy Little Theatre is set to present its Flash Festival this weekend, featuring six short plays written, directed and performed by local artists.

With 25 script submissions received, the group has selected six of the best to be presented at Peninsula Theatre for four performances only.

The plays to be presented are : Bloated Ducks written by Sally Bartley (director Clay Williamson); Zoom Out written by Sally Davies (director Gordon Crawford); Terms of Engagement written by Danielle Whiting Brame (director Yuley Buist); The Man in The Back Bedroom written by Trudi Slavin (director Karen Rowe); The King Is Dead written by Ethan Dale (director Sarah Lovesy) and Keeping Safe written by Jenna Arnold (director Terry Matthews).

The annual festival, which began in 2015 and had a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions, aims to provide a vehicle for playwrights and first-time directors as they work with new and experienced actors to bring new works to the stage.

WWLT President, Christine Vale, said the festival had been highly successful in previous years.

“The aim is to give local writers, actors and directors an opportunity to do something small so they can dip their toe in the water of community theatre,” Vale said.

“The proof of the festival’s success is that many people have gone on from Flash to take part in major productions for WWLT and other groups.

“I am constantly surprised at the variety of scripts submitted, showing how ingenious writers can be.

“They use the theme of the festival, which this year is What If?, to provide plays encompassing everything from humour to pathos.”

Performers this year range from newcomers to WWLT to audience favourites such as Yvonne Berry-Porter, Jake Cain-Roser, Rebecca Bright and Judi Jones.

Performances will be at 8pm on Friday, September 23, 2pm and 8pm on Saturday, September 24, and 2pm Sunday, September 25 (to be followed by an awards ceremony).
