Meet the Coast’s own Ash Barty

Meet Ash Barty. No, not the tennis star, but a cute little kangaroo joey at the Australian Reptile Park which has been named in her honour.

With Barty’s historic Australian Open win fresh in the minds of Australians, park staff, who have been searching for over a month for the perfect name for the joey, decided they couldn’t do better than name here after one of the country’s sporting greats.

Little “Ash Barty” has been hopping around showing her athleticism ever since Barty’s momentous win.

Seemingly wobbly on her tiny little feet and learning to explore the Australian Reptile Park, she is already showing the strength and athleticism shared by her namesake.

For now, the joey still sticks closely by Mum’s side but will presumably begin to adventure further away as she gets more confident.

Park Director Tim Faulkner said the joey’s new name was a perfect fit.

The joey is a part of the Park’s kangaroo mob which visitors are able to interact with and hand-feed.
