Tuggerah train station will get a multi-level commuter car park under a Federal Labor Government, according to Federal Opposition Leader, Mr Bill Shorten.
Mr Shorten said the local infrastructure project would be part of Labor’s $300m National Park and Ride Fund for new or expanded car parks at public transport hubs, such as train stations. “Labor backs public transport – it’s good for commuters and it eases congestion on our roads,” Mr Shorten said when he visited Tuggerah to make the announcement. “But too many residents on the Central Coast are frustrated at the lack of available parking at train stations as they travel into the city for work,” he said. “More than 30,000 people commute from the Central Coast to the city for work.” Mr Shorten said the Member for Dobell, Ms Emma McBride, had “told me that locals are fed up with the lack of available car spaces at local train stations.
“Trying to find a park and missing out, or leaving home earlier than you should have to just find a car space, is a terrible way to start your working day. “Then it happens all over again when you come from homework, and you’ve got to walk long distances to get to your car. “Labor has listened to locals, and that’s why we will build car parks at Gosford, Woy Woy and Tuggerah to help locals start their working day right. “Tuggerah station is getting busier, but the infrastructure isn’t keeping up with the growth in commuters,” Ms McBride said. Following the announcement, Ms McBride met with State Member for Wyong and Shadow Minister for the Central Coast, Mr David Harris, and Central Coast Mayor,
Ms Jane Smith to discuss Federal Labor’s commitment to build a multi-storey carpark at Tuggerah Station. “Mayor Smith has welcomed the funding commitment, recognising that we have a large commuting population and parking issues in our town centres,” Ms McBride said. The Council, in its 2017-18 operational plan, resolved to investigate and design a multi-storey carpark at Tuggerah Station by June 30, 2019. “A future Labor Government will work with the council to see the parking is delivered,” Ms McBride said.
