A free post breast cancer program will begin in Berkeley Vale from February 6.
The program, ‘Encore’, is delivered by YWCA NSW to help women reclaim wellness after experiencing the adversity of being diagnosed and treated for breast cancer.
Whilst each program has a strong focus on specifically targeted exercise, the sessions also include information sharing through guest speakers and link into local community and resources as well as enabling participants to meet others who have had similar experiences.
“Our evaluation shows that the program clearly impacts the lives of participants,” Encore Program Coordinator, Ms Viki Totsis, said.
“Women report feeling better, both physically and emotionally, and often comment on the new connections they have made with other women who’ve shared a similar experience,” she said.
The program incorporates both land and hydrotherapy exercises.
“Exercise is one of the ways of supporting the body to recover after cancer treatment and it’s also a good way of keeping spirits up,” says NSW Program Manager, Ms Kate Guthrey.
“Encore not only offers women the proven benefits of exercise, but it also allows them the opportunity to connect with others sharing similar experiences and speaking without judgement, which is a very important part of recovery,” Ms Guthrey said.
The encore program runs for eight weeks and can be tailored to all fitness levels.
Sessions will run from February 6 until March 27.
The program is funded by NSW Government Health and is free for all participants.
