One of the first reverse vending machines in NSW has been installed at Bateau Bay, as part of the state’s container deposit scheme rollout, Member of the NSW Upper House, Mr Taylor Martin, announced on November 28.
The kiosk has been installed at Bateau Bay Square, making it one of many kiosks to be installed in communities across the state, ahead of the start of the scheme on December 1.
Mr Martin said this was another example of the NSW Government delivering for local communities.
“This scheme will be easy and convenient for people to use,” Mr Martin said.
“It will be a game-changer; it will make a major contribution to helping the NSW Government reach its goal to reduce litter volume by 40 per cent by 2020.”
People will be able to choose to donate their refund directly to selected charities or transfer it to their designated account.
People will also be able to redeem the refund for cash from Woolworths supermarkets, or use a credit voucher towards their shopping at Woolworths across NSW (except Metro branded Woolworths stores).
NSW Environment Minister, Ms Gabrielle Upton, said the rollout was starting now because it was a massive logistical exercise.
“This is proof that Return and Earn is coming to a suburb or town near all of us.
“There are plenty more to be installed across the state in the coming weeks,” Ms Upton said.
The reverse vending machines at locations such as Bateau Bay Square will make up part of the state’s collection network, which will include hundreds of collection points.”
Drink containers eligible for the 10-cent refund include most containers between 150ml and three litres.
Containers should not be crushed or broken, and have the original label attached to be eligible for the refund.
Central Coast Councillor, Ms Jilly Pilon, said: “It is great to see Bateau Bay chosen as one of the early locations for Return and Earn.
“I urge the community to give this a go and help keep our suburb clean.”
Other locations will be finalised in the coming weeks.
