Warning to prepare for 3G switch off

Federal Member for Dobell Emma McBride is warning locals to prepare for the 3G switch off set to occur next Monday, October 28.

Australian 3G networks are being switched over to 4G and 5G networks, and the industry originally estimated this would impact up to 740,000 people.

Following investigations by the government, that number has reduced to 73,000.

McBride met with Telstra, Optus and other telco companies in Canberra and urged them to work with communities with older populations, like the Central Coast, to make sure no one is left behind.

After initially committing to the switch off in early 2024, Telstra and Optus delayed their switch off until October 28 to allow customers more time to make sure they wouldn’t be impacted.

Importantly, Telstra customers can check if their phone is usable after the switch off by messaging 3 to 3498.

3G-only handsets won’t be able to make any calls after the switch off, and that will be apparent to users.

McBride said of particular concern was the fact that certain devices currently in the market will not be able to contact Triple Zero post-switch off because of manufacturers’ device settings.

She said Australians rightly expected to be able to rely on the Triple Zero service when they need it and it was one of the most critical public interest requirements for mobile carriers.

“Over the past year I’ve worked hard, including meeting with the telco companies, to make sure that no one on the Central Coast is left behind by this switch off,” McBride said.

“Our community is home to many older people with basic phones that they use in emergencies situations.

“Access to Triple Zero is absolutely critical.

“In these final days I encourage anyone who believes they may be affected to check their handset and if unsure to contact their provider to make sure they will not be impacted by the switch off.”
